Now that you have your Lickimat, you want to look after it so that it will last a long time.
The main question we get is how to clean a LickiMat®. Technically they can go in the dishwasher, but we advise against it. Unless you can lay it perfectly flat on the rack, there is a risk it will warp.
If you want a fully dishwasher safe LickiMat® then we suggest you choose a LickiMat® TUFF or SLOMO; they have a rigid base so they do not warp in the dishwasher.
Hand washing is the best way to clean your Classic LickiMats®. (Soother, Buddy, Playdate, Felix & Casper.) If your cat is anything like Ziggy, you will find most of the mat surface is pretty clean anyway, except the areas where the food is still trapped.
If your LickiMat® has been sitting on the floor all day, and the food bits that your cat couldn't get out are now stuck dry - leave it to soak for about 15 minutes. This will make life a bit easier before attempting to clean it. Lay the mat in the sink and run warm water over it with a few drops of washing up liquid.
The best tools to clean your LickiMat® are soft Nylon or Silicone bristled dishwashing brushes like the ones pictured left. Hard brushes or abrasive scrubbing pads might damage your LickiMat®.
The first brush has silicone bristles and the middle one is nylon. The last one, that looks like a mini toilet brush, is in fact a small bottle brush with very soft silicone bristles. They all work well cleaning the mats, but read on to find out the best performer for each style of LickiMat®.
The silicone brush worked best for the LickiMat® Buddy™. It got into the corners well and cleaned all the leftover meaty cat food out in almost one go. The nylon bristle brush works quite well on this one too.
Nylon bristles worked best on the LickiMat® Playdate™. The nylon brush has longer bristles and is a bit more flexible than the other two brushes. The longer bristles are great at getting into the corner pockets of the LickiMat® Playdate™
The silicone bottle brush works best on LickiMat® Soother™. The LickiMat® Soother™ has a lot of little teeth to clean between. So the silicone bottle brush was the best choice for this one as it works best passing through the gaps between the teeth. I tried all three brushes and felt that the nylon one worked well too. The silicone gripped on to the teeth too much and wasn't good for this design at all.
Another idea for cleaning the Felix, Casper & Soother mats is to use a Nylon bristle toothbrush. The toothbrush is really good at getting in between all the nooks and crannies.
Instructions For Cleaning:
- Use your selected brush to work up and down the LickiMat® surface, then left to right, then circular movements paying particular attention to the corners & edges.
- Repeat the process if there is still food stuck.
- After cleaning, rinse well, shake off excess water and lie flat face down to dry.
- When not in use, leave some where it can lay flat.
